Would a degree in finance be a waste if I think I want to do sales?

I am a freshman in college and I am trying to choose my major. I keep going back and forth between general business administration and business administration with a concentration in finance. I know it is possible for me to get $40K to $50K right out of college with a finance degree. Is that possible in sales? I live in Houston, Texas if that helps. What should I do?

  1. I would not opt for any undergraduate in business, sales or finance. In this ultra-competitive employer market, they are taking engineers and MBAs over undergraduates of any major in business. Case in point, my brother-in-law has an undergrad in Industrial Engineering and he at a major American corporate retailer and has been on the fast track, over anyone who has a business degree.

Business in the undergraduate level is only theory, no real application of that theory is taught. So, in actuality, if you got an undergrad in say, English literature, and then got an M.B.A. you would be at an advantage over someone with a Bachelor’s in business.

If I were even considering a bachelor’s in finance, I would instead opt for a financial engineering degree or any engineering degree where you would make exponentially more money than a business undergrad.

To answer your question, a finance degree is worth more in the work world than a sales major, however, all of the entry level jobs for someone with a finance degree are in accounting. So, from my own experience, steer clear.
