What is the original German source of the following Arthur Schopenhauer quote which is prevalent on the internet: “Almost all of our sorrows spring out of our relations with other people”.
I would really like the original German equivalent. So not merely a German translation, but the actual words Schopenhauer wrote himself, and where exactly in what book. Thank you very, very much!
It’s not a short and nippy quote unfortunately, but a fragment of a long and clumsy sentence.
He wrote it in an essay called “Lebensweisheit (worldly wisdom)” in chapter B “Unser Verhalten gegen uns selbst betreffend (concerning our behavior toward ourselves)”, hidden in paragraph 9 half the way between Labruyére and Bernadin de St. Pierre.
“An sich selber so viel zu haben, dass man der Gesellschaft nicht bedarf, ist schon deshalb ein großes Glück, weil fast alle unsere Leiden aus der Gesellschaft entspringen, und die Geistesruhe, welche nächst der Gesundheit, das wesentlichste Element unseres Glückes ausmacht, durch jede Gesellschaft gefährdet wird und daher ohne ein bedeutendes Maß von Einsamkeit nicht bestehen kann.”
