What does the “Economy” option on a washing machine actually do?

I have a standard Zanussi washing machine that is est. 10-15 years old. It has an “Economy” option.

All I can gather that this does is avoid using hot water from the house hot water tank and heats the water within the washer using an electric element.

As heating the water by electricity is both more expensive and more carbon intensive than heating it by gas – where is the economising?

Or am I incorrect in my assertation to what the “Economy” button does?

  1. Just like you said it is 10-15 years old, and back then they thought that option was economical. Present day we know other wise. I say don’t use that option since it will cost you more.

  2. my grandma used to use some option on her machine that just reused water from one cycle to the next- it may be doing that on your machine.

  3. read the owner’s manual or look one up online.
