On Feb. 20, 2012 TIME MAGAZINE had a remarkable article showing: 42% of Americans give themselves a grade of C, D or F when it comes to personal finance. That’s according to the 2012 Consumer Financial Literacy Survey from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Network Branded Prepaid Card Association. That’s up from 35% in 2010. 80% of adults say they could benefit from the advice of a professional when it comes to everyday financial decisions—up from 76% last year. 27% of adults seeking help with a debt problem go to family and friends. Last year 8% said they’d first contact their lender. But this year it is up to 13%. A whopping 44% of adults have ordered a credit score in the past 12 months. It was only 37% a year ago. And the number of adults paying their bills late rose from 27% to 33% in a year. And those with 0% savings is at 39% and continuing to rise. . Just 43% of adults have a budget 22% have no clue who much they area spending on food, housing or entertainment. More people are using prepaid debit cards as their preferred plastic for convenience, to help avoid over drawing their accounts and because they are safer than carrying currency.
