Poll: Americans Progressive On Key Issues

While they talk about cutting so-called entitlement programs in Washington, the American people have completely different priorities. When asked what’s the first thing they would do to balance the budget, Americans had an unmistakably clear answer — raise taxes on the rich. It came in number one by a mile, with a whopping 61 percent. If that wasn’t progressive enough, cutting defense spending came in number two, with 20 percent. And if all of that wasn’t clear enough, when asked about cutting Medicare, only 4 percent were in favor of it. Only 3 percent wanted to cut Social Security as a way to balance the budget. I thought the country was center-right? That’s what all of the pundits tell us 24/7 on television. What happened now? Do those answers look center-right to you? They look decidedly center-left to anyone with a pulse. Washington is going to hate this news because they were just getting ready to cut people’s Social Security. That’s what the president’s Deficit Commission suggested. That’s what all of the Republicans are massively in favor of. @Mitsyrules Because as of the 1970s conservatism is a meaningless word, & liberal has become a dirty word. When asked on actual POLICY , that is when asked what they believe the country should do a majority or at least plurality of people agree with social democratic policies & this trend goes back decades. It’s true 40% of Americans call themselves conservative but only 32% of voters are registered w/ the “conservative party” while 45% are registered with the “liberal party”.

@SpitfireOFatj Germany isn’t bad either. I’m an ex-pat living in Germany. That social democratic hell hole is humming along at a masculine 7% unemployment and falling. All with those evil ideas like a mandatory minimum of 5 weeks vacation, mandatory healthcare for all, generous retirement benefits, and welfare benefits which include re-education programs. Maybe Jefferson was right after all. Jefferson believed that there should be a revolution every 20 years, to keep the government from getting too corrupt. @Mitsyrules Pretty much every poll going back decades shows the majority (or at least a plurality) of Americans agree with social democratic policies. If you don’t like the fact most Americans disagree with you that”s fine but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Europe is fiscally and socially liberal and the rest of the world is pretty much the same…except for the socially-conservative Muslims who don’t want non-Muslims in their midst and would prob. embrace fiscal liberalism if their countries weren’t hell holes.

For me, I never really thought that the majority of Americans are hate mongering, Glenn Beck lovers. What angers me is the complacency of the American people. 61% of the American people want something, however, they ALLOW the government to do whatever.
