Orrin Hatch Gets Angry & Ted Kennedy Requests Recess – Clarence Thomas 2nd Hearing Part 6 (1991)

October 11, 1991 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com In June 1989, President George HW Bush appointed Thomas to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, despite Thomas’s initial protestations that he would not like to be a judge. Thomas gained the support of other African Americans such as former Transportation Secretary William Coleman, but said that when meeting white Democratic staffers in the United States Senate, he was “struck by how easy it had become for sanctimonious whites to accuse a black man of not caring about civil rights.” Thomas’s confirmation hearing was uneventful. He developed warm relationships during his 19 months on the federal court, including with fellow federal judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg. When Justice William Brennan stepped down in 1990, Bush wanted to nominate Thomas as Brennan’s replacement since he felt that replacing Thurgood Marshall—who was expected to be retiring soon—with Thomas could be perceived as a race-based appointment. However, Bush decided that Thomas had not yet had enough experience as a judge, having served only several months on the federal bench. Bush therefore nominated Judge David Souter of the First Circuit instead. After the appointment of David Souter and the ensuing disappointment of conservatives, White House chief of staff John H. Sununu promised that the president would fill the next Supreme Court vacancy with a “true conservative” and predicted a “knock

  1. Truly one of the most outrageous episodes in recent memory of the Senate. Dems couldn’t stand that a conservative was going to replace Thurgood Marshall, so they put a hit out on him, courtesy of Anita Hill, abetted by Kennedy and a supine Joe Biden. Disgusting.

  2. @avzeolla always about race right?.. both parties were black..

  3. @jrwigand Yeah those past 13 years of undisclosed income have nothing to do with it.

  4. Clarence Thomas is by far the best Supreme Court justice on the current court. He has consistently followed strict interpretation of the Constitution and never gives in to partisan bickering.

  5. Orrin H. was right

  6. hatch is right. she hadnt PROVEN anything at that point!! they were mere allegations. the fact that biden would grant her request that her statement not be used is PREPOSTEROUS!
those pussies didn’t want to be accused of being unfair to a black woman so they granted her wish. I STILL CANT BELIEVE IT!!!

  7. Progressives like Biden and Kennedy have to lie and impose frauds on the public. If they told the truth, they’d never be elected. They must lie to get in the game and be successful.

  8. At 9:57 Senator Hatch seems to be defending the non-classified nature of already released material, thus completely vindicating the modern-day discussion of WikiLeaks material by government employees. But of course everyone hates secrecy until it fits their agenda.

  9. @Chslosers I think trying to ridicule the sitting Vice President of the United States and then, inaccurately calling him “second on command” is pretty weak. The VP is not second in command of anything (assuming that upstart1776 was referring to military matters). The National Security Act of 1947 clearly demonstrates that the Secretary of Defense and not the VP is the second link in the chain of command when it comes to national defense matters.

  10. @CymHastings that was a pretty weak insult.

  11. @broadjumper1 No, that’s not what I was saying but I can understand why you would think that because of how I phrased it. What I was trying to get across is that many (but certainly not most or all) people in political office have pursued it for their own gain. I think everyone can agree with that. Still, I apologize for not being clear.

  12. Biden and Kennedy were fair – We put a second rate legal mind on the court, Thomas is a joke. GH Bush’s worst call ever!

  13. Wow, he was a great actor..I see things have not changed.

  14. @jrwigand – So, what you’re saying is that ALL Justices appointed to the court since Thomas have all pursued the role for personal gain or status rather than to serve the nation? Hogwash…

  15. @jrwigand LOL.

  16. Holy shit. That was hardcore.

  17. @upstart1776 You mean “second-in-command”? Talk about a fool; look in the mirror.

  18. I forgot what a fool Joe Biden is. And now he’s second on command…but not for much longer

  19. What I appreciate most about Judge Thomas is that you can tell he wasn’t seeking this appointment or thought it would give him status. He accepted it because 1) He was asked by the President and 2) His desire was to serve America. We just don’t see that anymore.

  20. This was such a joke and the entire Senate should be embarrassed. George H. W. Bush said it best, sadly, “It’s all politics.” Two words and a letter to explain this: Roe v. Wade.

  21. I couldn’t even recognize Orrin Hatch!

  22. Jesus, Biden, it’s called a wig.
