JUDY GARLAND “GET HAPPY” (SUMMER STOCK, 1950)

JUDY GARLAND “GET HAPPY” Though it’s called Summer Stock, this marvelous “let’s put on a show” musical – the final one that showcased the peerless pair of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly – is a delight for all seasons. The story is simple: a homespun farm family allows a Broadway production company to rehearse its new show on their property – if the performers “pay” their way by pitching in with all the farm chores! But the pleasures are abundant: a show-stopping, all-star “Battle of the Dances” that starts out as a square dance and blossoms into a cavalcade of high-stepping dance favorites; Kelly’s marvelous song and later dance to “You, Wonderful You;” four of the most popular comedic screen actors ever: Phil Silvers, Eddie Bracken, Hans Conried and Marjorie Main; and Garland’s incomparable “Get Happy,” a smashing sequence that’s one of her peak movie moments.

  9. @yutubecmnt – well, you make some valid points about the entertainment industry and its lowest-common-denominator approach. Part of it is technology, as well. AutoTune corrects bad singing and as a result, good singing loses its marketability.

  10. @EyeLean5280 Because alot of the newer artists just aren’t cutting the cheese. Atleast not the ones in Mainstream, the biz isn’t how it use to be, nowadays if you’re cute or absolutely weird you get a chance, even if you can’t belt like Garland. Don’t get me wrong, I think she was gorgeous, but people in hollywood didn’t and that’s why she had to work for it. Alot of the new artists just can’t match up, and they have big shoes to fill! Even the shoes of this tiny little woman.

  11. @BassoonistAlert you do live in the time of Barbra!!! Appreciate her while she’s still with us (;

  12. Little known fun fact Lady Gaga’s idol is not Madonna like everybody says its Judy Garland and I know you can’t compare the talent of nowadays to legends like Garland or Streisand or Minnelli but you know whats funny is that ,that gaga girl is a fan of Garland she even got a pair of the ruby slippers the actual ones from the movie and she kinda has a similar vibrato to Garland I know you cant compare legend like that but yeah im not making it up.

  23. @lovelygurlkisses it’s bad because you blab on about why it’s not bad and bring up crappy shows like House in videos of good ol judy garland. It’s not bad you’re finding her, just that people like you have to write the same old annoying rant I’ve seen on countless videos. Just watch the video.

  24. @dohk0p Rufus Wainwright’s reworking of her Carnegie Hall setlist also brought me here – he also had great legs!
