How to connect a quote to a current event?
I need to do this hw where I connect this quote for the hobbit: “We must all keep together and not risk getting separated. All of us must escape or none.” with a current event. I overheard some of my classmates talking about connecting it to war, but how would I explain how it relates to each other?
In general the quote means it’s important for friends or allies to stick together when facing a serious threat. It’s a variation of Benjamin Franklin’s comment before signing the Declaration of Independence: “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.”
Your classmates could certainly connect it to a war if they could think of a currrent one where it’s important for different countries to stick together. The war in Afghanistan is one possibility, where there are a number of allies from different countries cooperating with the USA … but the trouble with that is, it would be pretty much of a stretch to say “All of us must escape or none,” because some of our allies could escape just fine.
Maybe you could connect it to the war on drugs in Mexico, where there have been over 7,000 people killed in the past year. Both our government and the Mexicans’ had better keep together in fighting those drug wars, or none of us will escape a world of hurt. You could also add the govts of Colombia and other South American cocaine producers.
Another possibility is the current U.S. financial crisis, in which (they tell us) our politicians had better get their act together or none of us will escape another depression.
