How do you indicate minor changes you’ve made within a quote?

I don’t want to put the entire quote: “I didn’t have money to buy gas or to buy food. I didn’t have money to even buy her medicine. I certainly didn’t have for a gift.” I need to use a quote though, isn’t there a way to use parenthesis or square parenthesis to indicate that I’ve made changes to the original quote?
“I didn’t have money to buy gas or to buy food”…”I certainly didn’t have for a gift.” just quote two different parts like that. I don’t know if that’s what you mean though.
inserting [...] into the quote where the text you’ve taken out has been should work.
“I didn’t have money to buy gas or to buy food. [...] I certainly didn’t have for a gift.”
I’m not sure whether that first period should be there or not, though.
