How do I start off an essay paper with a quote?

I want to start off my essay with a quote, but do not know the proper formatting. I always thought that when you start a paper with a quote, you have to do something special with the margins and italicize the font, but I am not exactly sure if that is correct.

Any help is appreciated.

  1. blah blah once said ” quote……”

  2. Introduce the writer of the quote first for example Herman Melville once said “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation”. Then you would explain what your paper will have to do with the quote etc……
