Gwen Guthrie – Ain’t Nothing Going On But The Rent

“Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But The Rent” is a controversial hit song recorded by late R&B recording artist Gwen Guthrie, released as a single in 1986. The song was controversial in that the woman in the song can be viewed as shallow and a “gold digger”, since she will only love a man if he’s rich and he has a job. The song has a lyrical interpolation from Billy Preston’s 1974 hit, “Nothing from Nothing”. While not a big hit in the United States, only reaching #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was a big hit in Europe, among reaching #5 in the United Kingdom and remains a classic of ’80s radio in that country.
@jewelz86 but at the same time, she’s saying what can you do for me

I agree with what this sista is saying!! I’ve dated one too many broke asses…
i find it funny (and quite sad, honestly) that some people interpret the woman in the song to be a gold digger. to me, the lyrics say: if we are going to be together, you need to have a job and earn your own money, cause you sure as hell aren’t going to live off of me. :p
This is a classic song. I think people think too deep into a song, instead of enjoying it for it is, which is entertainment. In essence, we men should be working, instead of trying to be fake wanna be hustlers and what have you. A man who works is the first step to being a responsible human being.
@ShawnDthePoet Thank U for the correction. I knew it was one of those all female groups. I often get the 2 mixed up.
@Erionnacirema You Mean TLC
While I’m looking for some more Female Soul groups, I HAVE to SPIN one of my all-time JAMZ from the late Gwen Guthrie.
This song came out in the mid-80s long B4 “Scrubs” by SWV came out much later.

@ImalHasan
It’s funny how you brothers will say that. You will tell black women shouldn’t look at men for money yet you will spend a lot pf money and provide of non-black women. This song is not about being a gold digger. It’s about having a JOB to providing for your woman and family.
Any man that hates this song is a lazy ass broke ass unemployed ass nigga, real talk!
PREACH THE TRUTH, GWEN!! RIP
No romance without finance………my mom and her sisters said this in the 1950′s…this is not a new concept…….

If you are in Maryland and workout at either Ballys in Catonsville or Top Shape Fitness in Columbia beware of Andye Kitt. She’s a gold digger big time.
