Gwen Guthrie – Ain’t Nothing Going On But The Rent

“Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But The Rent” is a controversial hit song recorded by late R&B recording artist Gwen Guthrie, released as a single in 1986. The song was controversial in that the woman in the song can be viewed as shallow and a “gold digger”, since she will only love a man if he’s rich and he has a job. The song has a lyrical interpolation from Billy Preston’s 1974 hit, “Nothing from Nothing”. While not a big hit in the United States, only reaching #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was a big hit in Europe, among reaching #5 in the United Kingdom and remains a classic of ’80s radio in that country.

    i find it funny (and quite sad, honestly) that some people interpret the woman in the song to be a gold digger. to me, the lyrics say: if we are going to be together, you need to have a job and earn your own money, cause you sure as hell aren’t going to live off of me. :p

    This is a classic song. I think people think too deep into a song, instead of enjoying it for it is, which is entertainment. In essence, we men should be working, instead of trying to be fake wanna be hustlers and what have you. A man who works is the first step to being a responsible human being.

    While I’m looking for some more Female Soul groups, I HAVE to SPIN one of my all-time JAMZ from the late Gwen Guthrie.

    This song came out in the mid-80s long B4 “Scrubs” by SWV came out much later.

    It’s funny how you brothers will say that. You will tell black women shouldn’t look at men for money yet you will spend a lot pf money and provide of non-black women. This song is not about being a gold digger. It’s about having a JOB to providing for your woman and family.
