Chip Shot: Intel Atom is Half the Performance of Celeron

www.uberpulse.com After the end of the formal executives presentations at the Intel Investor conference, I wandered around the demo area set up in the same building, looking for some cool new technologies. To me the most interesting one was, “news oblige”, the Atom booth where Intel engineers were showing prototypes of Nettops using the upcoming low-power Atom processor. I chatted with Nettop general manager Noury Al-Khaledy (pictured) about his Atom-based desktop that could sell at the super low price of 200 dollars. Inspite the Atom CPU low performance, about half of the Celeron chip (the Atom chip is supposed to be th smallest [performing] element of computing), I thought it was enough power to surf the web or watch a standard definition movie. “It’s purposed built from the ground up to deliver an Internet centric usage model. Very simply what that means is, if you want to surf the Web… It does that great… It’s a consumption based machine (social networking, web browsing, very light editing)… It’s a very aspirational box for someone who’s trying to do a Net type of experience. If for example you want to watch HD video or you want to decode or encode videos, then we’ll be looking at a Core 2 Duo box… Pricing will be around $199 to $250 price range… The mobile version of that, you would expect a $250 to $299 price range”, said Al-Khaledy. And as a souvenir, Intel gave all the conference attendees a sample of the Atom chip… pretty cool! www.uberpulse.com

  1. My friend has a little net top (note book) .. 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM and it is quit good in performing common tasks usually we can do at some distant place e.g. office and all other heavy stuff would be on desktop at home having x64 AMD….
    however it is cool…..

  2. Amazing… he’s telling the truth! Are you sure this guy is not an engineer? :)

  3. well, walt disney does offend me, AT HOME.

  5. YEAH he MIXED them up

he thinks Celeron is CENTRINO aka Pentium M

  6. i play halo on both my Atom and Celeron. the celeron hits at 1GHz tops atom hits at a peak of 1.66 but its still hella fun.

  7. word

  8. Yes, comparing core2duo and intel atom, ofcourse the power consumption (around 4w for atom) is a big argument to adquire an atom… but u will always have slower cpu, may be in some future, with 32nm tecnology we will be able to have high-performance atom, but today is a good choice to do “common stuff” but an atom is not for gaming or extreme using….

  9. I guess he mixed up Celeron with Centrino. The first Pentium M, known as “Banias”, may have double the performance an Atom has.

  10. walla 7abebe

  11. if its smaller
then i loooove it more :-)

  12. Pico-ITX is even better.

  13. i love nano itx

  14. ok guys,, so question.. i have pentium dual core desktop computer, so that means that i spend more power that using a intel atom? but pentium dual core is faster that atom right?
ok,, i’m not saying that i’m right,, so feel free to slap me.. lol… it is like speed vs power…

  15. Atom 200= single core
    Atom 300= dual core

it’s an eco cpu…I do ps cs4 stuff and video editing on one. screw the marketing. low wattage design is also good for a 24/7 server to save on kwh.

  16. i’m using a netbook which has a intel atom processor and i do everything on it from video editing to 720p videos…. literally everything…. i’m not sayin it the best processor in the world but…. it is capable of doing more than just internet/web based apps

  17. I’ve had so many problem with the celeron. T_T
But the atom seems to be working great.

  18. so, I guess, he was abit humble about the processor considering the videos here displaying folks running games and apps on it.

  19. because a celeron core base, performance of 1.8GHz = p4 performance 2.6ghz

  20. if i don’t turn off power saving mode i get the same thing on my dell inspiron 1525.

how do you think atom stands compared to some other architectures like celeron, core 2 duo or even pentium….because i want to get a netbook but i heard that atom is really chunky and lazy in processor power. i’m thinking of getting like a cheap 15″ laptop than a netbook, because size doesn’t really matter, i’m really all about power and quality.

  21. Edit: Than atom. Celeron is faster than athlon, but uses more power.

  22. AMD athlon 2000+ @ 1 GHz uses less power and its faster, believe or not. Read more from google.

  23. i don’t get the (standerd deff) junk my acer aspire one handles HD video just fine full 1080 rez scaled on the netbooks screen or full force conected to an external LCD.

mind you to get HD running smooth you have to turn off power saving mode in the netbook.
otherwise it tends to hickup every couple seconds it drops a few frames.

  24. are you kidding me? i am able to hack the gibson all night long in my car with the 6.5 hour battery life I get on my netbook.

  25. would the intel atom 330 be suitable for a htpc?

  26. was this guy fired for telling the truith?

  27. I downloaded Resident Evil 5 torrent from http://www.games-iso.com last week and, despite the fact its an old game, its the best XBOX 360 game ever made in my opinion ;-)

  42. This pretty slick band that I saw play during the 2010 Olympics just released their new album Golden Bombay. They’re kind of jazzy/electronic in a unique way.It just went out retail on May 18th and HMV.ca has it for $12.99 whereas their site has it for Pay Whatever You Want. Here’s the direct link to the store page (It’s in French but pretty self explanatory. English to come soon

  43. This Blog is very nice.

  44. Does anyone know how to increase the stack size that a daemon can use? Like: ulimit -s unlimited? I tried /etc/security/limits.conf but that is…
